Hungarian traditional costume

The Hungarian traditional costume is a typical way of dressing of the Hungarians. The wear expressed the person's social place, age and different occasions. They wore different clothes on weekdays and on holidays.

The traditional costume means the person's status, age, job and grade. So it showed almost everything about  a person. For example: on the men's hat the feather or the posy expressed if he is a child or a young man going on recruiting or a bridegroom.
The girls wore headdress called 'párta' wreath and ribbons. The married women wore pinnen.

Long time ago traditional dress was made at home by women. They made ordinary clothes and clothes for festivals. There were new fashioned clothes made of manufactured material and this was the work of craftsmen.

Parts of the traditional costume

Men's clothes were made of linen like shirts, drawers. The waistcoat and trousers were made of thick broad cloth.
Women's wear includes skirts, apron and waistcoat.

In winter they wore bolero of Hungarian cut, ' dolmány ' and cloak. The underwear was plain and archaic.

They wore varied shoes made of leather. Women wore slippers, shoes and boots while men wore brogue and boots.

Headdresses were important too. For men hat, kuchma, for women wreath, pinner, headkerchief and headdress called 'párta' as well as jewels, hat ornaments and ribbons.
