Hungarian traditional costume

Hungarian traditional costume

The Hungarian traditional costume is a typical way of dressing of the Hungarians. The wear expressed the person's social place, age and different occasions. They wore different clothes on weekdays and on holidays.

The traditional costume means the person's status, age, job and grade. So it showed almost everything about  a person. For example: on the men's hat the feather or the posy expressed if he is a child or a young man going on recruiting or a bridegroom.
The girls wore headdress called 'párta' wreath and ribbons. The married women wore pinnen.

Long time ago traditional dress was made at home by women. They made ordinary clothes and clothes for festivals. There were new fashioned clothes made of manufactured material and this was the work of craftsmen.

Parts of the traditional costume

Men's clothes were made of linen like shirts, drawers. The waistcoat and trousers were made of thick broad cloth.
Women's wear includes skirts, apron and waistcoat.

In winter they wore bolero of Hungarian cut, ' dolmány ' and cloak. The underwear was plain and archaic.

They wore varied shoes made of leather. Women wore slippers, shoes and boots while men wore brogue and boots.

Headdresses were important too. For men hat, kuchma, for women wreath, pinner, headkerchief and headdress called 'párta' as well as jewels, hat ornaments and ribbons.

Women had traditional long hair. Just girls could walk with uncovered head and their hair was plaited and decorated with ribbons. Women wore different shaped and sized kerchief.

Men wore hat decorated with ribbon, feather or posy.

Some typical Hungarian wear

'Sárközi' wear is decorative. It had a lot of (5) underskirts. It's interesting that men's clothes are colourful and richly decorated

'Matyó' traditional costume

Women's clothes were long and specia gothic style. The richly embroidered apron was typical for women and men too.

The most spectacular wear of Transylvania is 'Kalotaszeg' traditional costume. It is very colourful. The clothes were decorated with embroidery, ribbons and pearls. Girls wear headdress called 'párta' with pearls.

One of the best known wear is 'Kalocsa'

It is decorated with colourful embroidery. They wear more underskirts under the pleated skirts and they have an apron with lace trimming above it. They have freaked stockings and colourful slippers.

Regional meeting

Dear Friends,

We had a meeting with other schools from the region. We introduced them our project, the partner schools and countries , the activities of the project and the plans of the common work in the future. Some of our guests are also taking part in a similar international project so it was a good occassion for sharing opinions.

We wish you a Merry Christmas

Christmas decorations

Preparing for Christmas

Some weeks before Christmas children are making Christmas decorations and little gifts at school. Here are some of the photos taken in classes.

Honey cakes

We have a tradition in Hungary that before Christmas we make honey cakes. We decorate them with different seeds or egg white foam. They are delicious.
Now we are going to show you how to make them.

Ingredients:

4 cups flour
1 cup granulated sugar
2/3 cup honey
1/2 cup unsalted butter (4 TBSP or 2 ounces)
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1 teaspoon ground cloves
4 teaspoons baking soda
1 lemon, rind of, grated
1 egg
BAKING AND PRE-BAKING DECORATION
extra egg(s) for egg wash
poppy seed (optional)
almond
nuts
sunflower seed

Directions:

1
DAY BEFORE BAKING:.
2
Mix together the flour, sugar, cinnamon, cloves and baking soda, butter and the honey.
3
Add 1 egg and mix them together. The dough should be soft (you can add a bit of lukewarm water if necessary), since it will harden a bit during its resting period.
4
Cover the dough in a bowl and let it rest at least one day at room temperature.
5
BAKING DAY:.
6
Rolling out the dough.
7
Cut desired shapes out of the dough (of about 3/8 inches thickness on average).
8
Before baking, brush with the yellow of an egg. If you are decorating with seeds, brush dough with egg yellow to "paste" seeds on top of dough before baking.
9
Place cut out pieces of dough on a cold, greased cookie sheet, bake at 180 degrees C0  for about 6-8 minutes. Thicker pieces may need a longer time (ovens temperatures also vary).
